Chicago is one of the few major trade show markets that genuinely splits between two unrelated venues — and unlike most cities, picking the wrong one can mean a 20-mile trip across town rather than a five-minute walk. Before you book a hotel, confirm which venue your show is actually at.
McCormick Place — the lakefront giant
McCormick Place sits on the lakefront just south of downtown Chicago’s South Loop, and it’s the largest convention center in North America at 2.6 million square feet. Most of Chicago’s headline trade shows run here. If your show is at McCormick Place, your hotel options are:
- Attached or adjacent properties — a handful of hotels connect directly or sit a short walk from the halls
- Downtown / South Loop hotels — a wider selection a short rideshare or bus ride from the venue, with easy access to the Loop and Michigan Avenue in the evenings
The Donald E. Stephens Convention Center — Rosemont, by O’Hare
The second venue is in Rosemont, right next to O’Hare International Airport — roughly 20 miles from McCormick Place, on the opposite side of the city with no quick way to get from one to the other. Shows here tend to be smaller and more specialized, and choosing Rosemont’s own hotel cluster matters even more here than at McCormick Place, since there’s no walkable downtown alternative nearby — Rosemont itself is a compact hotel-and-convention district built around the center.
Why the mix-up happens
Both venues host Chicago-branded trade shows, and it’s easy to assume “Chicago” hotel means “downtown Chicago” hotel by default. If your show is actually at Rosemont and you book a downtown hotel because it’s the more famous part of the city, you’re looking at a 30–45 minute rideshare each way during rush hour — a bad surprise on move-in day with a booth crate in tow.
How to check
Your show’s exhibitor kit or official event page will list the venue by name — look for “McCormick Place” specifically, or “Donald E. Stephens Convention Center” / “Rosemont” specifically. If it just says “Chicago,” check the venue address before you book, not after.
