The NEC (National Exhibition Centre) is the UK’s largest exhibition venue, sitting right next to Birmingham Airport — and unusually for a major convention centre, it comes with its own dedicated hotel cluster built directly around the halls. That gives NEC visitors a genuinely different choice than most cities: stay on-site, or stay in Birmingham city centre and commute in.
On-site at the NEC
A cluster of hotels — Hilton Birmingham Metropole, Crowne Plaza Birmingham NEC, ibis Styles Birmingham NEC & Airport, and others — sit within a few minutes’ walk of the exhibition halls, some connected directly by covered walkway. For exhibitors on the show floor from open to close, or anyone with early setup or late teardown days, this removes the commute question entirely.
Birmingham city centre
A wider selection of hotels sits in central Birmingham, reachable via a roughly 10-minute train ride from Birmingham International station, right by the NEC. This works well if you want evening access to the city — restaurants, the wider Birmingham nightlife, better transport connections onward — and don’t mind the short train hop each morning.
Why this split matters more at the NEC than most venues
Unlike venues where “downtown” and “near the venue” are the same few square miles, the NEC sits genuinely separate from Birmingham city centre — out by the airport, not in the city itself. There’s no walkable middle ground the way there might be at a downtown US convention center. It’s one or the other, and the train connection between them, while quick, is a real factor to plan around rather than an afterthought.
Which one fits your show
As a rough guide: booth staff working full show days, stay on-site. Teams attending select sessions or combining the show with client meetings elsewhere in Birmingham, the city centre often makes more sense. Larger teams sometimes split between the two, same as at other big venues.
